The Tortoise

The Méruimticook Trail is inspired and dedicated  to the tortoise, thanks to the presence of the wood tortoise, a species present in northwestern New Brunswick. The name Méruimticook, according to some sources, takes its origin in the Malecite language and would mean "tortoise lake".

This name pays homage to the Madawaska Malecite first nations and is related to the Baker Brook and Lake Jerry. The tortoise embodies the act of walking which althouf=gh slower than many other neams of transportation, allows to access remote locations otherwise inaccessible. Walking also favors a more intimate connexion with the environment through attentive observation of one's surroundings.

Finally, the hiker reaches his destination with perseverance, fully enjoying the moment. Therefore, the tortoise is a perfect symbol of the spirit of the trail.
